Pattern Competition Information
Criteria for Judging
Competitors will perform only USTF/ITF recognized patterns (Traditional Patterns of TKD) and will be judged on the following scoring criteria:
- Technical Content - Proper execution of the technique, proper use of the "tool" involved, memory of pattern, understanding of "fast-motion", "connecting motion", etc. as called for in the patterns.
- Power - Proper amount of energy into a technique to guarantee the results in a real conflict.
- Balance - Proper body position, weight distribution, posture, and no need to "reset" foot position.
- Breath Control - Proper inhaling and exhaling during techniques without hyperventilation (hopefully). In the end, you have to do what works for you but we will be looking at general guidelines for breath control.
- Rhythm - Proper cadence of the pattern with changes only where called for in a pattern, such as fast or slow motion, connecting motion, etc. Also, the proper application of Balance, and Breath Control as they apply to the Rhythm of the pattern will be important.
Individual Patterns Competition
Gup level competitors should choose from patterns at their current rank, or one of their last two prior patterns. If you just received your new rank and have not yet learned your current pattern, or just are not yet comfortable with it for a tournament performance, you may display one of your last two prior patterns for the competition.
Black Belt competitors - Individual Patterns Competition:
Black Belts may choose whatever Black Belt pattern they wish to display up to their current rank for their individual patterns competition. While we do bracket 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Dans separately, the 4th Dans and above will all be in a combined bracket.
Team Pattern Competition
Teams will perform only USTF/ITF recognized patterns. In addition to the scoring criteria mentioned above for individual patterns (technical content, power, balance, breath control, and rhythm), the Team Patterns will also be judged on "Teamwork and Choreography".
Each team may have an UNLIMITED number of members.
Care should be taken when putting these teams together to make sure that the pattern performed is no higher than the lowest-ranking member. If higher ranking competitors wish to do higher level patterns, they should register a separate team to accomplish that goal and let the lower ranks compete separately.
There are three (3) team types for this competition as follows:
Important Note: Competitors cannot be on more than one team of the same type (Gup Level, all Black Belts, or Mixed Ranks) because they would by definition, be competing against themselves. Example: A Black Belt cannot be on two different "Black Belt-Only" teams competing against themselves. However, they can be on a "Black Belt-Only" team and a "Mixed" team since those brackets are for different sets of awards.

There are three (3) team types for this competition as follows:
- All Gup-Level: Comprised of Gup level students of any and all such ranks.
- All Black Belts: Contains Black Belts only, of any and all Black Belt ranks. This group MUST perform Black Belt patterns.
- Mixed Ranks: Made up of both Gup level and Black Belt ranks. A true mixed team will have about half Black Belts and half Gup level ranks if possible.
